Schüblig Tuesday

Schüblig Tuesday is a holiday celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is the day when people used to empty the smokehouses and enjoyed a last piece of meat before Lent.
Emptying the smokehouses before Lent
For more than 400 years, Schüblig Tuesday has been celebrated in the Zurich Oberland. The day before Ash Wednesday is connected to the upcoming Lent when the smokehouses needed to be emptied and meat was eaten for a last time before the fasting period. The children of the Zurich Oberland had the day off from school until the late 1990s. They dressed up and wandered through the streets in the afternoon, reading poems and singing songs in the shops in order to receive various goodies.
